HOLINESS

A Change In Living ... A New Conformity To God

"After people commit their lives to Christ, they still feel a pull back to their old ways. Peter tells us to be like our heavenly Father - holy in everything we do. Holiness means being totally devoted or dedicated to God, set aside for his special use, and set apart from sin and its influence. We're to be set apart and different, not blending in with the crowd, yet not being different just for the sake of being different. What makes us different are God's qualities in our lives. Our focus and priorities must be his. All this is in direct contrast to our old ways.... We cannot become holy on our own, but God gives us his Holy Spirit to help us obey and to give us power to overcome sin. Don't use the excuse that you can't help slipping into sin. Call on God's power to free you from sin's grip." - Life Application Bible, p. 2197.

"...He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy: for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15, 16.

Jesus prayed in John 17:17: "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

"A follower of Christ becomes sanctified (set apart for sacred use, cleansed and made holy) through believing and obeying the Word of God (Heb. 4:12). He or she has already accepted forgiveness through Christ's sacrificial death (Heb. 7:26, 27). But daily application of God's Word has a purifying effect on our minds and hearts. It points out sin, motivates us to confess, renews our relationship with Christ, and guides us back to the right path." - Life Application Bible, p. 1844.

"Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." 2 Cor. 7:1.

"Cleansing ourselves is a twofold action: turning away from sin, and turning toward God. 'Perfecting holiness' means the Corinthians were to have nothing to do with paganism. They were to make a clean break with their past and give themselves to God alone." - Life Application Bible, p. 2038.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Rom. 12:1, 2.

"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." Heb. 12:14.

"Holiness is coupled with peace - staying out of quarrels. A right relationship with God leads to right relationships with fellow believers. Although we will not always feel love toward all other believers, we must pursue peace as we become more Christlike." - Life Application Bible, p. 2177.
